Cabochons

Jewelers were constrained to cabochons, carvings and very rough faceting until the 1400’s due to limitations in technology. Cabochons have a smooth curved top which lets a limited amount of light into the gemstone. Cabochons are the most common way of finishing opaque gemstones.
